If you’ve never used IRC before, there are some things you should know. First and foremost, response time is often measured in hours, not seconds. Its not unusual to ask a question and get an answer 6 hours later.

Because of this time delay on responses, there are some rules you should follow:

  1. Don’t ask empty questions. Things like “Is CovertJaguar around?”, “Can I ask a question?”, “Can someone help me?” will get ignored, they aren’t worth answering and generally just annoy anyone who might have considered helping you.
  2. Get to the point. Be concise, but provide as much information as you can the first time. Don’t wait for someone to ask you for details, logs, screenshots, etc… This can increase the possibility that someone will eventually be able to help without having to play “telephone tag” for a week.
  3. Stay in the channel. It takes more than 5 min for most responses, yet many people looking for help leave the channel after 5 mins. You won’t get help like that.
